Policy Initiatives
In 1993, CCC established its Florida Policy program to begin directly engaging in issues that affect U.S. nesting populations of sea turtles. Drawing on CCC’s four decades of international sea turtle conservation experience, this program is improving the survival outlook for marine turtles in Florida, which supports 90% of all the sea turtle nesting in continental U.S., by advocating for state protection of sea turtles and their habitat and empowering small, local sea turtle groups throughout Florida.
In 2006, CCC established its National & International Policy Program to focus on improving the survival outlook for marine turtles in the United States, and throughout the Atlantic Region. This program is carried out from a new CCC field office based just outside Washington DC and is working to raise national awareness about sea turtle issues and advocating for national and international protection of sea turtles and their habitat.
CCC works to reduce sea turtle interactions in U.S. and international fisheries by advocating for better fishing policies and legislation and educating resource managers and the public about the needs of sea turtles. We promote better safeguards for sea turtles through science-based recommendations and comment letters, collaboration with other conservation organizations, and meetings with officials at the Fisheries Service and Congressional staff to address specific issues. We also support federal appropriations for observers on fishing boats and funding for research and look for opportunities to work with fishermen.
Representatives from CCC regularly provide testimony to Congress, federal agencies and state officials on issues affecting sea turtles and their habitat. CCC closely monitors all issues related to the survival of sea turtles and informs conservationists, the media and CCC members about steps that should be taken to ensure sea turtle survival. When threats to sea turtles and their habitats are identified, CCC, through this program, addresses these issues by developing solution - oriented strategies.
